Will My Gas Fireplace Work in a Power Outage?
Yes, Flare Fireplaces indoor fireplaces can operate during a power outage using battery backup when equipped with a safety screen or Passive Double Glass, provided the gas supply remains available.
Which Flare Fireplaces Have Battery Backup?
All Flare indoor fireplace models support battery-backup operation in these configurations:
Safety Screen
Supports battery-backup operation.
Passive Double Glass
Passive DG supports battery-backup operation.
Power Vent
Requires a fan to run — cannot operate on battery backup alone.
Active Heat Flex
Requires a fan to run — cannot operate on battery backup alone.
The exceptions are fireplaces equipped with a Power Vent or Active Heat Flex. These systems require a fan to run and cannot operate on battery backup alone.
Why a Gas Fireplace Needs Power at All
The fire burns gas, but the controls are electronic. Flare fireplaces use the SIT Proflame II system. It lights the burner, sets the flame height, and runs thermostat mode. Normally, it runs on house power.
In compatible configurations, battery backup supplies power to these controls during an outage so you can continue using your fireplace.
How the Battery Backup Keeps It Going
The battery backup is a small pack that holds four AA batteries. You can turn the fire on with the remote, set the flame height, and even use thermostat mode, the same as any other night.
Because the pack only powers the fireplace during outages, the batteries can last a long time. Flare rates a set at up to two years, depending on use. This does not mean two years of continuous fireplace operation.
On battery power, multicolor LED lights and accessories that require house power, such as the Summer Kit, wait for electricity to return. The fire still warms the room.
How Can I Prepare for a Power Outage?
Check your fireplace’s manual for battery requirements and operating instructions before an outage. Confirm whether your installation uses a safety screen, Passive Double Glass, a Power Vent, or Active Heat Flex. Then contact your fireplace installer or the store where you bought your fireplace and ask about the battery backup option.
