How to Choose and Specify a Frameless Traditional Fireplace

Four decisions shape how a Flare Frameless Traditional looks and behaves: size, interior, burner, and safety barrier. None of them change the framing, the venting or the clearances — so the design questions can be settled without touching the build.

The difference that matters is the viewing window, not the outside dimension.

The Traditional 42 is 42 1/4″ wide overall, with a 38 11/16″ × 32″ viewing window. The Traditional 46 is 46″ wide, with a 42 7/16″ × 36″ window — roughly four more inches of glass in each direction.

Both vent through the same 5″ × 8″ direct vent pipe and share the same clearances, so the choice is proportional rather than structural. In a standard eight-foot room, the 42 reads as a fireplace set within a wall; the 46 starts to read as the wall’s focal point. On a wide chimney breast or a full-height stone surround, the larger window usually holds the composition better.

Both allow a television or art piece 12″ above the opening, thanks to the cool wall design.

There are nine interiors, and they divide into two families. You choose one or the other — the satin black is an interior in its own right, not a panel added to a brick firebox.

Eight brick and stone designs. Four finishes — light stone, natural, black and red — each offered in two layouts:

  • Offset, a running-bond pattern that reads quiet and architectural
  • Herringbone, a chevron that catches firelight along every edge and reads more decorative

Light stone and natural warm the firebox and sit well with plaster, oak or limestone. Black recedes, leaving the flame to carry the composition. Red herringbone is the most traditional of the set, and the one most often specified when the fireplace should look inherited rather than installed.

Modern satin black. The ninth option lines the firebox in a satin black reflective surface instead of brick. It multiplies the flame rather than framing it, and gives the unit a contemporary read while keeping the traditional proportions. Choose it when the fireplace needs to sit in a modern interior, or when you want maximum depth from the smaller unit.

This is the decision that most changes what the fire actually looks like. Both burners cost the same.

The Summit Burner is an in-log burner. The flame is built into realistic driftwood logs and rises out of them into the vertical space of the window. It reads like a wood fire that has been burning a while — contained, elevated, traditional in character.

The Bonfire Burner is a flat-style burner running the width of the firebox. The flame is wider and taller, filling the opening more completely, and pairs with a large oak log set that sits above it as media. Included overhead lighting adds a glow across the logs. It reads bolder — closer to an open fire than a hearth fire.

Put simply: Summit puts the fire in the logs. Bonfire puts the fire under and across them.

Both run on natural gas or liquid propane, both work with or without a power vent, both integrate with the Heat Flex systems, and both fit identical framing. The choice is visual.

Every residential Traditional ships with the invisible mesh safety screen as standard.

The optional Double Glass-Passive barrier replaces that screen with a second pane of glass, creating an air gap between the two. Quiet blower fans move cool air up through the gap, bringing the outer pane below 172°F — safe for a brief touch. It changes no external dimensions or framing requirements, and needs no power vent.

Specify it where small children or a commercial setting make a touchable surface necessary, or where you want the clearest possible view of the flame with nothing between you and the fire.

The term “traditional fireplace” is used to describe a more squared off design with logs and other natural media elements incorporated. Our traditional fireplace still maintains our famous frameless design, equips the new Summit burner system to elevate the fire within, and has 9 different interior options to choose from — eight brick and stone patterns, offered in offset or herringbone, plus a black reflective glass interior.

Multicolor LED Lighting

The multicolor LED kit lights up your firebox with any color in the spectrum using the included remote. Set the color and the memory will remember your choice each time you power the unit on or off. You can also power the lights independently to use the lights regardless of if the fireplace is on.

Optional Double Glass-Passive

Flare Fireplaces offers a quick touch Double Glass-Passive safety barrier, which functions without the need of a power vent, across our traditional lineup. It is perfect when you are looking to achieve a silent, crystal clear viewing window to your flame.

Wall Switch

All residential Flare Fireplaces ship standard with a simple Wall Switch as part of the purchase.

Home Automation

The modern electronic gas valves equipped on all Flare Fireplaces enable your fireplace to be integrated into a new or pre-existing home automation system. Using signal relays brought to the fireplace, you can control your Flare using your Home Automation hub to control turning your fireplace on and off.
